A recent survey commissioned by Bentley University in 2014 found that “compared with business decision-makers and corporate recruiters, high school and college students were far less likely to define preparedness in terms of personal traits or work ethic” (Chase, 2015). This means skills and experience rank high for college students when they evaluate preparedness. Unfortunately, the same survey found “thirty-seven percent of recent college graduates give themselves a grade of “C” or lower on their individual level of preparedness” (Chase, 2015). In which case it is essential to provide interns with skills and practical experience to improve their feeling of readiness and to productively integrate them into our company.

A key challenge is to deploy a real-time retail model across all channels to enhance the customer experience. “Retailers need to create a single, unified commerce platform which eliminates individual channel silos and offers a holistic customer experience across all customer touch-points” (Gregoire, 2014). Interns must understand that three of the top challenges facing retailers revolve around creating an Omni Commerce experience (Gregoire, 2014).
Key Issues
•Data and data management – The amount of data available today and the increased customer demand for access to a lot of product information makes data management a priority (Gregoire, 2014).
•Inventory visibility and availability –Retailers continue looking for improved ways to maximize inventory and ensure it is accessible via all selling channels and customer engagement points (Gregoire, 2014).
•Technology and innovation- Technology and system capabilities are changing and innovative solutions are needed to keep up (Gregoire, 2014).
