The film, however, holds obesity as its sole focus, while the article delves into both extremes of malnutrition and its effects. More countries are affected by malnutrition than one would assume. “At least fifty-seven countries have a double burden or serious levels or under nutrition – including stunting and anemia – as well as rising numbers of adults who are overweight or obese, putting a massive strain on sometimes already fragile health systems.” (Kelland 2) The film Overfed and Undernourished discusses health risks and briefly describes the issue as an epidemic, while the article “A Third of People Worldwide Are Either Undernourished or Overweight” goes into specific detail on just how large this problem is. “One in three people suffer from some form of malnutrition,” said Lawrence Haddad, a senior researcher at the U.S.-based International Food Policy Research Institute and a co-author of the report.” (Kelland 2) That ratio is larger than I, and what I believe to be most people, originally …show more content…
The article discusses that as well, but also discusses other health risks, as stated above. As the article states, there are more than just health risks involved with this epidemic. Family costs are affected as well. “Individual family costs can also be high. In the United States, when one person in a household is obese, that household spends on average an extra 8.0 percent of its annual income on healthcare. In China, having diabetes results in an annual 16.3 percent loss of income for the patient.” (Kelland 2)
Just like in the film, progress has been made. In the film, Liam lost 30 kilos and led a much healthier life. In the article, it states, “The number of stunted children under five is falling in every region except Africa and Oceania, and in Ghana stunting rates have almost halved – to 19 percent from 36 percent – in just over a decade.” (Kelland
