This all works because in the membrane there are different membrane proteins that use ATP to work. One way is active transport. Active transport is when, for example, sodium, will pass though the protein channel and go to wherever there is a higher concentration of sodium. If there is more sodium in the cell, the sodium will want to go into the cell, because there is a higher concentration of sodium. Another way is called osmosis. This is when a semi-permeable liquid or solid goes in or out of the cell. This way also takes ATP to work. For example, water, if there a more sodium outside the cell, the water will move there because there is more substances on the other side. The second to last way is called diffusion. This is when there is a substance in water, say food coloring, the coloring will make equilibrium with the water. The coloring will evenly spread through the water, making it evenly distributed. The last way a substance moves in or out of a cell’s membrane is called facilitated diffusion. Facilitated diffusion is the spontaneous movement of a solute that goes into the channel protein. A solute goes into the pore of the channel, then the channel helps diffusion process and does not require energy. The molecule is released in the far side of the
