Out of seventeen of the featured comments, fifteen of them were against the idea of censorship in art for the two main reasons shown in these next two quotes. One of the most powerful being, “If it’s censored, it’s not art” (1). This seemed to be the general consensus of the audience that censorship has no place in art and that art should be left the way the artist intended it to be. In his book, “The Human Machine” Bennett says, ”Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission” (104). By saying this Bennett means that censoring is unnecessary since people should be capable enough to filter the art they see without the government having to do so for them. If someone thinks that they might be offended by a piece of artwork, no one is forcing them to look at it. All that person would have to do is not seek out what they know will offend them. Also, not everyone is the same. Someone may be offended by a certain painting while another may think the painting is marvelous and wants to hang it up in their living room. Therefore, if the government were to censor anything and everything that could possibly offend someone, there would be no artwork left to look
