The Cerebral Palsy Alliance logo represents an organization that provides support and a better quality of life for people with disabilities. The logo is formed by 11 irregular shapes and three words. When looking at the logo we can identify the shape of a palm print. The gestalt law of closure makes this possible as the viewer closes the gaps between the shapes and groups them accordingly to construct a “whole” which results in a familiar form. Proximity and similarity help identify the different sections that form the print. For example, the similar groups that are arranged exactly like the fingers in our hands. Furthermore, within the logo, we can identify the Australia’s territory shape. Being able to focus your attention in the shape of the hand print or in the shape of Australia is a good use of the figure-ground phenomenon (Soegaard, 2014). In this case the hand print is the main figure. In my opinion, the logo represents effectively the word “Alliance” by using the hand as a symbol of support within the Australian community.

Utilizing Semiotics as a theory of visual perception, we can understand how our brain is working to consume the meaning of the poster. Semiotics studies the meaning of signs and how the meanings are constructed (Sullivan, 2009). In the image, we have what most adult people would recognize as a representation of a pyramid. According to Peirce’s Theory of Signs, we can classify this symbol as an iconic sign because it demonstrates similarity with something else. The pyramid is then followed by a graphical key. This element enables the viewer to perceive and think differently about the pyramid. This triggers the brain to associate the colours in the graphic key to the image, therefore, changing the pyramid into a pie chart rather than just a simplistic
