Because of the relationship of the cervical spine with the thoracic and lumbar spine, flexibility exercises can be performed in isolation or combined with the rest of the spine (Houglum, 2017). The gain of range of motion (ROM) and mobility should be part of the short-term goal of the rehabilitation program.
Strengthening exercise will target muscle strength and endurance in the cervical spine and the whole spinal region with the prescription of isometric exercises initially, then isotonic exercises, keeping in mind the patient keeps a good cervical alignment and good posture throughout the exercises. Other important factors to consider as part of cervical spine rehabilitation is inclusion of proprioception and balance exercises to improve stability, correct posture and body mechanics (Houglum, 2017). It should be part of a long-term goal to regain functional capacity.
