“Chained” will explore the self-disclosure of revealing one's sexuality. Coming out of the closet, framed and debated as a privacy issue is described and experienced variously as a psychological process or journey; decision-making or risk-taking; a speech act or matter of personal identity; a rite of passage; liberation or emancipation from oppression; an ordeal; a means toward feeling gay pride instead of shame and social stigma; Focusing on the themes of alienation, acceptance, courage, fear, journey & love.
These themes will be explored by symbolically representing them in an episodic manner, filmed specifically to emphasize the art genre.

While there will be sections that are filmed, they will be chopped and placed strategically throughout the piece to display symbolism and disjointed storyline. A continuous shot will be the gay son going about his daily activities with chains and weights wrapped around him, this theme will continue in another shot depicting him drowning. These shots will represent the ‘pressure/weight’ of keeping his secret to himself, which is why when he comes out at the end, the dropping of the weights and finally coming up for air represents letting go. Scenes will include “The Birth”, a symbolic representation of life and new beginning, taking place at the beginning of the film with the use of bright lights and white sets, this scenes purpose will show how life is beautiful and the love we feel for family is unconditional. “Life in Limbo” will follow, showing how infancy changes into maturity, introducing the chains and the father’s stereotypical homophobic/racist attitude that has been brought about by an ever changing world and influential/prejudice society, ultimately contrasting “the births” light and happy feeling. “The Encounter” is next, showing how the Gay son falls in love with the boyfriend, making him realise his sexuality. The boyfriend helps the gay son feel more comfortable with himself, and in doing so, helps find the key to unlock the chains that surround him. “The Realisation” shows the gay son coming forward to his father about his sexuality, the father will react horribly but will eventually realise through flashbacks of the birth, how much he loves his son no matter.
