My car just broke down again and I had to walk the rest of the way here.” Miguel sighed and started to lead her into the building, passing by the front office. “Well, you’ve already missed the first ten minutes of our math class, so you can look off my notes or Makenna’s.” Dendera quickly ran into the office to sign in and grab a pass, then the two of them hurried through the deserted hallways to their first hour. Immediately upon entering the classroom the teacher, Mr. Cohen, glared at her and gestured for her to take her seat. The two of them always sat at a small table in the back of the room, where it was dark and nobody bothered them. Already sitting at the table was a blonde girl, obviously a cheerleader, who was diligently writing down everything Mr. Cohen was saying. Dendera looked away from her. Thoughts were racing through her head, faster than cars on a race track, faster than a starship speeding through the cosmos at the speed of life. Was she going to out her now? Was she going to push her away and never want to see her again? Makenna may not be the best friend, but she was one of Dendera’s only friends.
