When the competitive gymnast won the title of national champion after all of her hard work, she gave her longtime coach a beatific look. The terrifying behemoth tramped in the direction of the group of tourists as they ran away screaming in horror. When I heard the gossip around To Kill a Mockingbird throughout my grade, I started to dread starting the book. By the end, my opinion had completely turned around. The nation is involved in a debate on whether or not to include To Kill a Mockingbird in school curriculum. Because To Kill A Mockingbird centers around many of the racial challenges that impact our society, the book offers an opportunity for students to engage these difficult conversations but in the safety of the school. Most of the novel is centered around the unjust and racist trial of a black man named Tom Robinson that is wrongly accused of rape.…
The book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, shouldn’t be read in the 9th grade due to the inappropriate language used. The book’s main character, Scout, uses inappropriate language in everyday conversation, so that could put in the minds of 9th graders that that type of language is appropriate to say all the time. At the dinner table, When Uncle Jack comes to visit before Christmas, Uncle Jack teaches Scout a lesson, “But at supper that evening when I asked him to pass the damn ham, please, Uncle Jack pointed at me. “See me afterwards, young lady,”... “You like words like damn and hell now, don’t you?”…

“Three Little Words” is a memoir that shares the story of a girl named Ashley Rhodes-Courter, who spent 10 years in the foster care system. Ashley and her younger brother, Luke, were removed from their birth mother, Lorraine, when Ashley was only 3 years old. She was placed in 14 different homes before she had a permanent address. There was a lot that could be absorbed from Ashley’s story, but one thing that stood out to me is how heavily childhood experiences impacted the lives of many characters in this book. In the late 1960s, John Bowlby proposed his theory of attachment.…
The reading on Unjust Drug Laws was the most enlightening of the last five. It definitely changed my perspective on the legalization of drugs, to which I initially felt very opposed. What triggered my shift in views were his refutations to prohibitionist arguments. Before the reading and heading into the seminar, I firmly believed that drugs should be outlawed because they can harm the user and others around them. I still think that many drugs are harmful and the use of them should be discouraged, but I now realize that it is unethical to take away someone’s right to do whatever they wish with their own body, even if it does endanger themselves.…
