Part 1: The Human Genome Project
1.The main goals of the HGP (Human Genome Project) are to establish all the 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA, find out and understand the order of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, save the information of human DNA in databases, enhance tools for data analysis, move similar technologies to the private sector, which means that it would not be owned by the government, and last but not least, include the legal, social and ethical issues that may come up during this project. Organisms such as Escherichia coli, the fruit fly (Drosophila), and mouse were used for this project’s research.
2. A complete set of DNA and genes in …show more content…
A Pseudogene is a gene that lost its gene expression in the cell, or lost the ability to code protein.
2. Name of the gene: CFTR
3. The gene CFTR is located on chromosome 7.
4. Transcript: is the process when a segment of DNA is copied to RNA.
5. Transcript: CFTR-001 - cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator.
Length: 6132 bps.
6. Exon: a segment of a DNA or RNA molecule containing information coding for a protein or peptide sequence. It has 27 exons.
7. Residues: 1,480
8. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited autosomal recessive multisystem disease with altered functions of exocrine gland primarily involving the lungs, pancreas and sweat glands. Symptoms can include cough, continuous lung infections, inability to gain weight, and fatty stools.
Part 4: Choose a Gene
1. Breast Cancer Gene
2. Gene: BRCA2
3. It is located on chromosome 13.
4. BRCA2-004, Length: 7,950.
5. This gene contains 27 exons.
6. Residues: …show more content…
1), dog (Chr. 31), chicken (Chr. 1), western clawed frog (Chr UN) , and zebrafish (Chr.9). With this information provided, we can learn that this gene is located on a different chromosome for different species. However, it is located on the same chromosome 21 for humans and chimpanzees.
10. Incidental mutations. Symptoms: reduced body weight, brain weight, spatial learning scores, forelimb grip strength, locomotor activity -(movement from one location to another). To compare the compare the symptoms we can notice some similarities regarding the brain activity, and also trouble learning spatial relationships. This means that the mutations in this particular gene may have similar phenotypes.
Part 6: Conclusion
This information definitely will have the potential to affect my life and the life of people I love. Before doing this research, I was not aware of this information and particularly, the Human Genome Project. It is very useful and also very beneficial for everyone who is interested in Biology, or even for someone who is just curious and eager to learn. With the information researched we get to learn genes, mutations that cause diseases and also the similarities between various species. It was very interesting to learn that the gene does not have to be on the same chromosome in different
