Basil tries to help him go back to the good path but he doesn’t listen. He says nothing can change him back. “You want me. I’ve lost my way. You want me. Just like me every day. I feel so far away. You always come my way It repeats all over again”. However, when he escapes James vengeance for his sister Sibyl, Dorian feels as if he has gotten a second chance to be new. Dorian says he wants to change for good bow that he realizes all the terrible things he has done. However, Lord Henry keeps on telling him that there is no need for him to change because he is perfect as he is. Dorian thinks, “I am still the same person I was before. I am here, the same person I was from before, but an overgrown lie is trying to swallow me whole.” To that Dorian then responds saying, “Don’t try to persuade me that the first good action I have done for years, the first little bit of self-sacrifice I have ever known, is really a sort of sin. It’s a song talking about hiding your identity. About lying to yourself and to the world and the feeling of being dirty, disgraceful, and becoming a sinner. “I’ve been hiding it. Really, I won’t be able to endure it.” It’s continuation of struggling of finding who you really are and “confessing your sins” and asking for forgiveness. Like said before Dorian wants to be good or find his soul and decides to confess because he thinks that is the correct way to go back. He may not necessarily be asking for forgiveness but is just trying for his picture or his life to be back as how it was before. He realizes that we all have a soul. “The soul is a terrible reality. Dorian keeps on believing that he can be good and that he has already started to change. He tries to look at the portrait again and hopes that the marks have faded because of the good he has done, but sees no change.
