He also believes that what the witch’s allegations can’t be good but can’t be bad. If the witches never brought their intel upon Macbeth, he wouldn’t be having these alarming thoughts. Macbeth decides to take it upon himself to let fate guide him when he says, “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Without my stir”(1.4.159-161) Macbeth’s one desire is to be king, if destiny leads him there he won’t have to commit murder or any heinous crimes. Lady Macbeth uses manipulation by emasculating and shaming him to convince him otherwise. Macbeth says to Lady Macbeth shortly after his encounter with the witches, “We will proceed no further in this business. He Hath honored me of late, and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people” (1.7.34-35). In this quote Macbeth clearly states to Lady Macbeth that he can’t go through with murder. When Macbeth says, “He Hath honored me of late” he is speaking about Duncan who has treats him with nothing but respect and honor. He also has no reason to to kill Duncan, he is a respected successful lord. Macbeth has a transparent conscience on the actions he’s expected to take to achieve becoming king. Lady Macbeth does not take no for an answer when she says to Macbeth, “ Was the hope drunk Wherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? {...} Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life And live a coward in thine own esteem” (1.7.39-47). Here she uses his masculinity and dignity to manipulate him. When she calls him a “coward” she is making him feel less of a man. Due to what Lady Macbeth said to Macbeth, he decides to kill Duncan.
