In the beginning, John’s wife is sick and he has had relations with Abby in the past. This makes him realize he has done his wife and God wrong so he regrets it, avoids Abby, and tries to make things better. As witchcraft heats up, their past relations could come into play. All this causes him to fix relations with his wife, or at least try. This causes a few people to not like it and go against it for it is wrong, one of them being John. He and a few others do everything to right for the right thing, even causing some to lose their lives for the innocent. But it seems as if every time John gets close to proving the lying girls wrong, the girls make up something else, setting him back.
One of the former lying girls, Mary Warren, is used by John to confess that the girls are lying and to save Elizabeth’s life. What happened was Abby accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft so she can have John to herself. Mary is pushed to her limits in court and ends up breaking and siding back with the girls. This makes John tell about his and Abby’s relations, and the only person able to testify, Elizabeth, will not tell the truth because she loves John so much.
