Speech recognition: identifying and comprehending human speech
Data analysis: finding patterns, interpreting complex data and reaching conclusions based on the analysis
Gaming: playing chess with an AI opponent, playing advanced strategy games
The field of artificial intelligence was first created at a conference at Dartmouth College in 1956. The participants then went on to become the leaders of AI research. The first developed AI programs were capable of playing checkers, proving …show more content…
One reason for this misrepresentation is how AI is depicted by artists, novelists, movie directors, and in general, the media. These can be in fictions, publications, documentaries, and movies. People go on to relate AI machines with fictional monsters, aliens, robots which are all potential threats to mankind. Unsurprisingly, they don 't realize that AI is a technology that we use in our daily lives; AI is seen as a technology that will be arriving in the future. One explanation may be because not every AI application is labeled AI and another well-acclaimed explanation is that AI doesn’t a definite definition. As AI expert, John McCarthy, puts it, “as soon as it works, no one calls it AI anymore”. According to Tim Urban, “Because of this phenomenon, AI often sounds like a mythical future prediction than a reality” (Urban). Movies like the Terminator sequels, A.I. Artificial Intelligence(2001), I, Robots(2004) are good examples. In their own way, they predicted the future of humankind and intelligent …show more content…
Nation-wise, AI systems and programs are being used in healthcare, education, military and other infrastructures. Other major applications of AI include in robotics and in technologies like face and speech recognition.
AI is breaking into the health industry by aiding biologists and doctors— making researches on new diseases, treatment of cancer, discovery of drugs and much more. An ambitious AI project by Microsoft, which is currently in the early stage of development, plans to find a cure for cancer (Boyle). It’s an experiment to create biological cells that can be programmed like a computer. The cells will potentially have the ability to fight cancerous cells of any kind. The project is named “Hanover”. Project Hanover utilizes machine learning and cloud computing to achieve its goals.
In Education, currently, AI is being used for personalizing the learning experience, giving online lessons to the global community, assessing the quality of curricular materials and grading the work of students. However, AI is still considerably trailing behind in education. Experts are arguing there are far less educational applications of AI than what is in need (Kurshan). AI has the potential to dramatically revolutionize the education
