The purpose of this lab was to observe the physical properties of different samples of matter and to use your observations and knowledge of chemistry to classify each sample as an element, a compound or a mixture.
II. MATERIALS
10 beakers containing different samples of matter
III. PROCEDURE
First off, put on a laboratory apron. Then, take a few minutes at each lab station and record three physical property observations of each sample of matter. Record the three physical property observations in Column B on the table. Next, classify each sample as either an element, a compound, or a mixture in Column C. While classifying the samples, think about the composition of the sample. Once all of the samples are classified as an element, …show more content…
CONCLUSION
Homogeneous means having the same uniform appearance and composition all throughout. Homogeneous can not be separated by physical means. Heterogeneous means having visibly different substances and can be separated by physical means.
The samples I classified as heterogenous were samples, 4 (Oil and Water), 7 (Sand and Water), 8 (Sand and Sugar) and 9 (Soil). My basis for classifying these samples as heterogeneous was being able to see the different/separate parts that were not uniformly distributed and thinking about how if a sample was taken out, not all of the parts would be evenly distributed in every sample taken out.
Two types of pure substances are elements and compounds. The ones observed in the lab are aluminum and table salt.
The samples that are mixtures are, 3 (Sugar Water), 4 (Oil and Water), 5 (Air), 6 (Milk), 7 (Sand and Water), 8 (Sand and Sugar), 9 (Soil), and 10 (Window Cleaner). My basis for classifying these samples as mixtures was, they all have more than one compound or element to make them up.

The purpose of this lab was met by successfully observing physical properties and being able to think about what the samples were and what they were made of. Using my knowledge of chemistry, I was able to use my observations and thoughts to piece together the classifications of the different samples. The purpose of this lab was also met because if this lab were to be done again, I could do it better than before with little to no
