Child abuse can be physical, emotion or sexual. Neglect is when caregivers choose not to provide food, clothing, shelter, supervision, and lack of medical attention when needed. In 2008, there was an estimated 772,000 victims reported. Neglect was the highest at 71%, followed by 16% physical abuse, 9% sexual abuse, and 7% psychological abuse. ProTrainings (2011). Neglect has the highest amount because it entails several aspects and is most reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Knowing when to report is crucial. It is frequently associated with physical and sexual abuse. Emotional abuse is designed to set the child up for constant guilt and to expect abuse as being normal. It is repetitive and eventually a growing behavior. That results in deep sadness, damaged self-concept, and makes them lack the ability to connect with others. It is rarely visible and they tend to turn the rage towards themselves and implode. When a child is exposed to this type of behavior, they then seek a lifetime of approval from others. They are more eager to fit in and be loved regardless of the cost. As adults, they are most likely involved in abusive relationships. A childhood of emotional abuse does not help them toughen up.
