Child abuse and neglect is a series social problem that affects millions of children across the world. According to UNICEF (2015), child abuse includes cases of violence, child labor, child abuse, female genital mutilation, child trafficking, child marriage, and general violation of children’s rights such as the right to play and education. Child maltreatment is a broad term defined as any intentional or unintentional act or behavior from parents or adults that can harm a child physically or emotionally(AIFS, 2015). (Lonne and Parton, 2014) argue that even though there are various reported cases of child abuse in Europe and the U.S., the worst areas for children are in Asia, Africa, and South America where millions of children face abuse without any option of reporting or seeking help. (Lamont, 2013) points that most of the cases of child abuse reported in Australia are mild such as emotional abuse and neglect. Only few cases of sexual abuse, violence and child labor are reported in Australia. (Hundeide and Armstrong, 2011) assert that 70% of child abuse and neglect occurs in dysfunctional families where the parents are in conflict, divorced, or abuse drugs and alcohol. Such families make children vulnerable to abuse either by the parents or those who live around them. The best way to prevent negligence and stop child abuse is to empower children. Children who know their rights and have access to reporting options are less likely to face abuse than those without the options.
