As it has been stated, labeling theory is the theory of how the self-identity and behavior of individuals may be determined or influenced by the terms used to describe or classify them. Sometime having a label can be negative. Throughout the education system, a child who has a label have treated differently than a child without a label. Stigma describes prejudicial attitudes toward and negative treatment of people with characteristics deemed dangerous, undesirable, or unworthy (Major and O’Brien 2005; Thornicroft et al. 2007, p. 463). Many children have been referred to special education because of inappropriate behaviors. It is a behavior rating scale that have various challenging behaviors questions. Rosenberg,M.S., Westling, D.L., McLeskey, J. (2008) state, after rating each behavior, the evaluator can then calculate summary scores; and because the scales are norm-referenced, the scores for the child can be used to determine his or her behavioral status compared to others.
Conclusion
Labeling students for special education serves multiple purposes that have direct and indirect benefits as well as risks. Even though it might seems agreeable to most individual, yet it is the most effective way to place students into special education. When students have been labeled, the education system can then appropriately service them. Once label, the steps are useful and fairness. Label or not to label, the stigma within the education system is there to stay. Labeling brings awareness to the school and the
