In the first chapter of this project, an overview of problem and an explanation as to why it was very important to look at the factors influencing Latino immigrant families into the child welfare system were postulated. In the second chapter, a detailed analysis of the various factors were presented. In this chapter acculturation and discipline style were among the most prominent factors to affect Latino immigrant parents entering the child welfare system.
In the third chapter, four different interventions were looked at and analyzed if they were effective to their respective target population. All four interventions were found to be effective due to adapting their curriculum to incorporate key cultural values and issues in …show more content…
Professionals can better address the needs of their clients if they have an understanding of where they are coming from. It is not just about linking them to the appropriate services but also providing psycho-education on the cultural practices here especially revolving around child abuse and neglect. There was also a prominent fear of social workers and the child welfare system as they were seen negatively. As I enter the world of becoming a social worker in a child welfare system as large of the Los Angeles County DCFS, where there is a large number of Latino immigrant communities, I wanted to better understand what was really going on in these communities and what interventions and programs could help alleviate these problems. Initially this project was created because of the value and knowledge it had to me, but asI started to share bits and pieces of my findings with colleagues at the DCFS office I intern at, it slowly morphed into something else. Many social workers took interest in my project and would ask me various questions and share a story or two of their own experiences working with these families. Although, I did not include any of these stories as part of my project, they did make me think of the factors found in the literature in a much more practical
