“Typography is everywhere. Signs are everywhere. It’s like painting with words, and everybody has to look at it. Graphic design is everywhere!”. A good majority of what she does at Pentagram, the design firm she is employed at, is typography. She has done books, album covers including that for Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” (which she hates, admittedly), and the logo for Citibank. The importance of typography, according to Scher, is that it creates an identity. Without logos, brand recognition goes out the window. Without the recognition needed to make sales, a brand is dead. The design is the brand. At one point she begins to speak about the design of the Palm Beach Ballot in 2001. The graphic designer had to design the election ballot for the 2001 presidential election. Since the population for that area was heavily elderly, she had to make sure all of the names on the list were big enough to read. In order to do so, she had to create a butterfly ballot. The ballot, however, was poorly designed. The designer designed the holes to be staggered, confusing many of the voters and resulting in a largely Jewish population electing an anti-semite. “Absolutely graphic design threw an election.”, Scher reflects. Each of these people have been told at least by the educational system that art is an impractical career, even when everything in life relies on art itself. High schools are cutting creative programs, yet graphic designers are thriving and architecture jobs are becoming more sought after every day. The achievements made by artists everywhere every day aren’t about to become unnecessary, so the school system and negative connotations in general when it comes to art need to change in order for the industry flourish, rather than getting by by what seems like a miracle. Children are the future, so in order to help make theirs easier, happier, and more successful, they need to be supported through the entirety of their upbringing, not just the very
