Chinese immigration to the United states (history) The motivations of Chinese immigrants is about the same as any other immigrant coming to the United States. Some came to America for the gold rush others came for better economic opportunities. Some others were forced to leave as contract laborers or refuges. This Chinese immigration can be separated in to three periods of time. The first period is 1849-1882. This period was shortly after the gold rush and did not last long because the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. During this period many young males were recruited to work in the American west. The second period of Chinese immigrants was from 1882-1965 this period only diplomats, merchants, and students and their dependents were allowed to travel to the United States. Other than that, during this period Chinese Americans were confined to segregated place, known as Chinatowns. Since many Chinese were wiped away of their democratic rights during this period, they made use of the courts and diplomatic channels to try and defend themselves. Confucianism originated in china about 2,500 years ago. Confucianism is not a religion but rather a code of ethics. The code of ethics is for proper personal behavior to promote good human relationships and a harmonious society. This harmonious society would that affect how they view happiness? Taoism or Daoism is just like Confucianism is originated in china about 2,500 years ago from an ancient Chinese thinker, Lao Zi. Taoism like Confucianism by not being a religion. There is no supernatural being or “God”. Taoism is more a belief that man is part of nature, and that there are elements of Yin (the negative) and Yang (the positive) in all natural things. Buddhism although it is considered a religion it does not have a supernatural being or creator in its belief. They belief in “reincarnation” of the afterlife.
