2. Abstract expressionism is post-World War Two art movement that began in New York. It began when artists left Europe because of the Nazi Regime, brining surrealist art to the US. There were two main forms of abstract expressionist painting; Gestural paintings that focused on spontaneous brush strokes, and colour field that focused on the use of colour rather than the use of depth and visible brush strokes. Mark Rothko was an abstract expressionist artist that started off making art that was representational. He went from creating figurative works that were inspired by mythology to making abstract, Colour Field paintings. However, his works weren’t just focused on colours; Rothko once said that ‘If you are only moved by color relationships, you are missing the point.
