Cognitive development in adolescence centers on the idea of being able to inquire about future events and relate the effects of those events back to ones own life (Kuther, 2017). In Freeks and Geeks, Lindsay’s cognitive development is displayed when she shows hesitancy regarding Nick and their relationship. She is nervous when going over to Nick’s house alone because she is aware of the events that may potentially take place, however, she still chooses to go through with it because of the benefits that will go along with it. In the episode “Girlfriends and Boyfriends”, Lindsay’s parents use an authoritative parenting style. Authoritative parenting is when the parents provide love and encouragement, yet still set boundaries for the children. Studies have proven that the authoritative parenting style allows for a positive development in children including self-determination, high self-esteem, a good work ethic, and academic competence (Kuther, 2017). In the episode of Freeks and Geeks, Lindsay’s parents are open with her about their own life, which in return shows Lindsay that she can be open about her life as well. For example, at the dinner table, Lindsay’s dad tells her about some decisions that he regrets. He is using the authoritative parenting style by encouraging Lindsay to be smart when she goes to Nick’s house. Authoritative parents use openness, compromising, and restrictions to encourage the child’s autonomy and allow them to feel respect (Kuther, 2017). The role that Lindsay’s parents play in her life allow her to have a positive development, which leads her to
