Trust is the foundation from which professional relationships originate. A cohesive team is dependent upon this foundation. Building a team depends on a variety of factors ranging from trust to communication. These dynamics will ensure mission accomplishment repeatedly. Building a team is more than lip service. Just as a car requires routine maintenance to function well, a cohesive team will also require routine maintenance to function well. A strong, cohesive team is dependent on how each member meshes their interpersonal attributes into a group focused on a common goal, while a team filled with impersonal attributes is weak and prone to fail.

Without it everything else falls. The amount of trust that each member has in the ability of each other will help in developing team cohesion. In the absence of trust, there is doubt. Doubt makes it difficult to work together so that we can ensure that the commander can understand and visualize the operational environment he or she will engage. Doubt also creates barriers to accomplishing the tasks necessary to facilitate both the conceptual and detailed planning required in the Army Design Process (ADP) and the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP). Both processes require input from the staff so that the commander can accurately visualize and ultimately decided upon a correct course of action for a given mission. Lack of faith in their staff, will hinder the commander’s ability to choose the right direction for mission accomplishment.
