The reading of this week begin with “Foundations of Sociological Thought” by Mcgee and Warms. The reading focused on some of the revolutionary minds of Sociology such as Weber, and Durkheim. A topic discussed in this reading was that of collective consciousness. Collective consciousness is the shared beliefs, ideas, attitudes and knowledge which are common in a social group (Mcgee &Warms 2012). By far the most interesting reading of the week, Radcliffe-Brown’s reading “On Joking Relationships” talked about the relationships built on making fun of and joking with others. Joking relationships can best be described as a relationship between two people who is required to tease the other and that person can’t take offense (Radcliffe-Brown 1940). In my personal opinion, this is the best way to build relationships with people. Those that can have joking relationships and can withstand teasing will probably be in your life for a long time.
The last reading of the week was by Max Gluckman. Max Gluckman was Social Anthropologist, who analyzed different political systems between different African societies. His paper on “The License in Ritual” Gluckman carried fieldwork studying Zulu society. Zulu society is a patriarchal society and women are excluded from any major decision. Once a year, women were allowed to act as men. The taboo is lifted, it benefited both genders and most importantly the community by releasing those pent up emotions and having a stronger community all
