“The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History”, written by Jennifer Price, talks frequently about the bright and daring colors that represented America’s culture in the 1950’s. Most industries and products all included flashy shades and vibrant hues, designed to impel light on the past for those that lived in the dreadful era of the Great Depression. It did fulfill its purpose; or at least it seemed to. The way she truly felt about the actual American culture, wasn’t necessarily expressed through just simple words. Although, when reading closely and thoroughly, it becomes very obvious that she makes American’s to live out a humorous and comical way of life through her diverse satirical strategies.…
Everyone was given a Phosphate, Nitrate, or a Dissolved Oxygen test. The average amount of Phosphates in the water was 0.1 parts per million, which is really good. The average amount of Nitrate in the Conodoguinet creek was 0.9 parts per million. The average number of Dissolved Oxygen was 9.8 parts per million. The results for the test are shown below.…
Analysis: There are several instances where the number of pillbugs in the light are equal to the number of pillbugs in the dark. It’s difficult to decipher a pattern in the data. The pillbugs seem very indecisive and continuously move between chambers. However, if one disregards the data where the number in light and dark are equal, there are three times where the amount in light is higher and only two times where the amount in dark is higher.…
The Red-tailed Black cockatoo also called the Calyptorhynchus banksii are under conservation. There are five sub-species of Red-tailed Black-cockatoo (Red-tailed Black cockatoo, 2014-16) and the two southern subspecies are near threatened. My group is experimenting on a Daphnia. The purpose of our experiment is to test the Daphnia’s with different liquids and see how heart rate increases, decreases or even kill the Daphnia. The variable in our experiment is changing the water content and seeing what the heart rate. The experiment on the Daphnia matters because if we were to have types of elements in lakes that can possibly kill the Daphnia’s, there can be a possibility there species could end. What the Daphnia prefers is open fresh water in their habitat.…
Analysis Competition was required with other native species just so that the a fish species that a student had could live. A student had to have 5 pom-poms to live so the student had to compete with other fish species to to get the necessary resources for survival and reproduction. The goby could eat anything so it was hard to compete with them. The fish species began to die off since the goby was eating all of the resources, and if there is no…
Turbidity, or the relative clarity of the water, is also an important parameter. Turbidity is a visible…
Jennifer Price’s view of American culture in her essay, “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History”, is communicated through quite sarcastic and accusing tones with how she crafts her text. As you read through the piece, Price delivers many facts about the influence of the “pink sensation”, or the flamingo image, in American culture during the 1950s. The way she delivers this, however, gives the impression that she doesn’t particularly favor American culture and her views of the topic aren’t those of positivity and outright worship. First Price begins her piece with how the image of the flamingo came to be such a well-known one throughout the United States, claiming that it “staked two major claims to boldness” (2). During the 1910s and…

The scientific name of the periwinkle snail is Littorina obtusata. They were first introduced to the Atlantic Coast during the 19th century. These snails are known mainly for a morphological trait, the variation of shell thickness within the population.…
It can be explained that the reproduction of organisms always exceeds the carrying capacity of the environment. Besides, the intraspecific competition happens such as the struggle for food, mates, and habitats. Also, the variations of organisms are beneficial for survival but sometimes they are counteractive.…

Colours are one of the most prominent and powerful uses of symbolism in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A wide array of colours are alluded to, continuously, throughout the novel, holding deep symbolism while being presented at face value. Characters like Myrtle Wilson and Jay Gatsby yearn to be those whom are the elite of society, The Elect, reflected in colours. Other characters such as Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s socioeconomic status consistently manifests itself in the colours that follow them. The colours that surround characters in The Great Gatsby reflect the differences between the socioeconomic classes of the time.…
Marion Petrie began her controlled breeding experiment with peacock offspring by observing peahen mate preferences in Whipsnade Park, UK. Observations showed that peahens appeared to have a preference for peacocks with more elaborate trains (i.e. larger in size and more eyespots). Petrie was interested in finding out why the peahens were mostly attracted to the peacocks with the most elaborate trains in this population. To test this idea, Petrie took eight males of different attractiveness from Whipsnade Park and separated them into individual pens. She then placed four females in each peacock’s hen at random – there were 32 peahens total used in this experiment.…
The flamingos that we observed at the zoo were American Flamingos. American Flamingos are a large species that are related to the greater and Chilean flamingo. They breed in the Galapagos, Coastal Columbia, venezuela, and nearby islands. The life expectancy for flamingos is one of the longest in birds, about forty years. There are over 40 American Flamingos currently held at zoo Miami, mainly being fed brine shrimp and blue-green algae.…
