Jefferson believed the federal government did not have to be that powerful because of the good judgement of the people. He thought that although sometimes people would make the wrong decisions they could be easily guided back onto the right path. The federal government should be a small less powerful, almost just there if needed, because they could rely on the people’s good judgement. Jefferson concluded that the state governments should be allowed to “nullify” or ignore the laws, if they thought they were not good or obnoxious.
