Luke starts off backwards. He begins talking about Christ and what he did in his life and then goes back to his birth with Mary and Joseph. Many believe it was written this way to put a lot of emphasis on Christ and what he did during his life. Matthew starts his gospel off beginning with Christ’s birth and then tells of what he did in his life and how he became our savior. So, Luke starts with Mary, the mother of Christ, and goes back to Adam. So, in this gospel, it tells how Mary gave birth and what happen when Christ was first born and then progressed back to Adam, the first man God created. Matthew, did the opposite of this. Matthew starts with Abraham and goes forward to Joseph. Joseph the same person in each gospel, who was married to Mary. In this gospel is when it talks about how God blessed Mary with Immaculate Conception. Mary was a virgin when God blessed her with being pregnant with Jesus Christ. This is why both gospels talk about Mary’s Immaculate Conception. Without each story both including Immaculate Conception, Mary could not have been a virgin and given birth to Christ. Luke’s genealogy starts at Adam and goes to King David. Adam is from the gospel of Adam and Eve. This gospel tells of the first humans God created and the first sin. However, I found other difference as well. One difference is whom the angel appeared to. In the gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel visits Mary and the same angel also visits the shepherds. The shepherds were walking when the angel came to them and told them that a savior had been born and to go see him. They did go see him and each brought a different gift; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each gift had a special meaning and each gift they took are still used today. In the gospel of Matthew, the angel visits Joseph. When the angel visits Joseph, the angel tells him to name his son Jesus. The angel also talks to Joseph and tells him what is happening. This help joseph be more comfortable with the whole thing. The shepherds were also in the gospel of Matthew but instead of shepherds, Matthew called them the three wise men. The three wise men in the story of Matthew are the same as the three shepherds in Luke story. In each story, whether shepherds or wise men, they went to visit Christ when he was born and took gifts. There were also other differences between the gospels such as in the gospel of Matthew it tells how Joseph resolves to divorce Mary. It tells how joseph was unsure of his marriage to Mary because she was supposed to be a virgin but was pregnant. It also tells how Mary, Joseph, and the baby escape to Egypt. This was not in the story of
