Compare and contrast the narrative of Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano, focusing on their experiences and their reactions to their captivity.
Captivity narratives were popular by both European and American. This type of narrative creates reactions of shock and the feel of empathy toward those people who were in captive. These narratives are autobiographical; they have elements of history and religion since they represent real events. Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano wrote about their captivity journey. They lived in fear and terror while being in captivity. Both of them described their experiences in captive and their ability to survive. Therefore, their narrative and experiences will be differing as the purpose of writing. Rowlandson wanted the readers to see how Native Americans are evils and savages. But Equiano wanted the readers to see the wild and cruel side of slavery system. Now, I will discuss their experiences in captivity. Rowlandson was captured by Indians with her children. After her child died of disease she called Indians savages and inhuman. The Indians took her to the wildness and separate the rest of her children. Then she is sold to another group of Indians, who bury her dead child. But she was a strong Christian woman who pursued God before doing anything or made any decision. So, she believed that God is testing her by her children. God gives her the strength to be surviving and to face all the bad and shocking things that she sees in captivity.
