Kids can learn how to be a good sportsman and accept defeat and the fact that it will happen sometimes. Despite the fact that losing a lot could cause you to have a negative outlook on the game it will also make others try harder to win, because they don’t want to lose anymore. When kids win the big game or do good their self esteem will be boosted and they will have a sense of accomplishment. Normally there is a lot of stress in the game and that can teach kids coping skills. Kirk Mango argues, “No matter how good an athlete becomes there will always be times when they "fail." It is what one does after a failure, how they cope, that will determine future positive outcomes”(Mango 2012). Additionally, with good coaches and good programs a positive code of ethical standards (PCES) is of major focus. It is something they most certainly support and work toward instilling in athletes under their direction(Mango 2012). According to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, “Teens who have positive influences and friends feel less of a need to participate in risky behavior”(Davis, 2014). This shows that through competitive sports kids can gain friends and role models allowing them to be safer. “Competitive sports helps you gain a solid understanding of group dynamics and its role in success/failure. You learn how to cooperate in a way that enhances your chance of accomplishment in and off the field”(Mango, 2012). Competitive sports is one of the best ways to learn teamwork and what your role is in it. Plus kids that play on the same team have a very high chance of becoming friends and creating a tight bond, because they probably share the same interests.
Although lots would argue there are too many injuries and stress, I believe the good things gained from competitive sports far outweigh the cons. For instance Brady Schmidt is a 7th grader and plays multiple competitive sports and has gained lots of social skills like how to work on a team, and how to communicate with others.
