Firstly, without remembering the past, we would never know what mistakes were previously made. Without knowing we are more likely to repeat the things we did wrong. Secondly, with freedom and choice deprived from us we can never experience the punishment or consequence that comes with making the wrong choice. Not only that but we can’t sense what it feels like when we do make the right decision. For example, on the game show “Let’s make a Deal” contestants are asked if they want what’s behind door number one or door number two. You choose door number one, behind it is a brand new car! I happen to think otherwise. I believe that “The Giver” does take place in a flawless community but I also think that it takes place in the near future. First off, I believe it happens in the near future because at the end of the novel, it says that Jonas comes across a house in elsewhere that he thinks is celebrating Christmas. The house in the story looked fairly similar to the ones we build today so it couldn’t have been far in the future. Secondly, I believe it takes place in the near future because considering the type of technology they use on a daily basis, it could not have happened in the present or the past. Furthermore, it was set in the near future because if you think about it, our technology isn’t far off from theirs. For instance, we have medication that can change our emotions e.g. Anti-depressants while they have pills that prevent specific types of dreams from happening.
