In this essay we are going to discuss the types of conflicts in the three short stories ‘A LETTER FROM GAZA’ by GHASSAN KANAFANI,’AFTER TWENTY YEARS’ by O. HENRY and ‘THE SCARLET IBIS’ by JAMES HURST, we have read. Mostly stories that u have read or seen as movies or serials, have a conflict, problem, struggle, difficulties, oppositions as the heart of them. The conflict is an essential or very important element of the story. A story does not necessarily have to end with a resolution, but it does need a conflict, or there may be one main conflict, and other minor or sub-conflicts. The story “The Scarlet Ibis” (1960) by JAMES HURST, the human side of this story touched may readers. In this story there are two characters the Doodle (protagonist) and towards his opposes the elder brother as the narrator (antagonist).Doodle was born physically weak. The narrator struggle against his younger brother’s (Doodle) physically inability because he was felt ashamed of having a five years old brother who couldn’t walk. This is a kind of conflict which effects the narrator’s feeling pride in the society. As the conflict clear from the beginning, he taught Doodle how to walk, of which reason the Doodle doesn’t knew. However first conflict is resolved when Doodle able to walk. The second conflict, when once the Scarlet ibis (a kind of protagonist) a big red bird with long graceful neck , brought in the family’s yard by a storm and it died because it was not used to the environment(antagonist),because it lives in the tropics. Similar to this conflict another instance is that when Doodle and narrator hurried off to Horse landing where climax begun. Narrator left doodle alone in the storm and the doodle’s weak body could not take the strain perhaps his heart burst because he was bleeding from the mouth and died under the tree and he fails to handle the critical situation against the environment. He learns “what life is and what existence is worth”. Then the second conflict we have read in the story “After twenty years”. In which the two friends had made a promise to meet at same place after twenty years and they met but was in opposite’s ways of circumstances. This gives the lesson of loyalty in friend ship and the main idea is ‘the law is above friendship’. And in the last and the third story “The Scarlet ibis” very touched. In this the Doodle faced two kinds of conflicts or cruelty; emotional hostility and natural hostility. Here the Doodle is resembles towards the birds situation especially with the storm (and red colour, bleeding, tree etc). There is definite conflict between love and pride. ).
