To show this, while sitting with the family and talking about their situation, it is stated that, “But how can it be Gregor? If it were, he would’ve realized a long time ago that it is impossible for human beings to live with a creature like that, and he would’ve left on his own accord” (Kafka paragraph 85). Grete, Gregor's sister, wants Gregor to leave the apartment which the family shared because that is what would make her happy. The night after hearing this, Gregor decided to honor Grete’s wishes and, “His head sank all the way down, and from his nostrils came his last feeble breath” (Kafka paragraph 89). Gregor wanted to put his sister, and his family out of their miseries, so he conforms to the wishes of his family in order to make their lives easier and in turn more pleasurable. By dying, Gregor granted his families wishes, and now, although being dead, he was able to cooperate with his family and please them by taking a burden away from their lives. In addition, in the story Bartleby a similar situation occurs, the lawyer cooperates with his employees, other than Bartleby, in order to create a better working environment for his company which is what they all desired. For example, in the poem The Unknown Citizen, a state creates a model of a citizen that they want people to strive to be like. For instance, in the poem, while describing their rendition of a perfect man, it is stated that “and had everything necessary to be the modern man” (Auden line 20). The state has a hankering for people who do not stand out but who are modern and blend in with the rest of society.By creating a model such as this, citizens will contend to their government's wishes and conform themselves to be similar to the model. To add to this point, it is also stated in the poem, “For his Union reports that he paid his dues” (Auden line 10). The state wants everyone to aspire to be like this model, to fit in and do everything as they are told. By being an authority figure, people who see this model are going to have the desires to please the state, and view this model as a standard that all citizens should resemble because that is what would please them. In another poem Do not go gentle into that good night, it is stated, “Though wise men in their end know dark is right” (Thomas line 4). Although in other lines of this poem it suggests that the men should fight stand out from the group and not conform to the wishes of society but, the men know that in the end, the best thing to do is to conform to what
