The chapter smoothly starts by explaining what a contraceptive is and what they prevent. The basic information in the beginning and historical background provided a good basis and understanding for the rest of the chapter before it went more in depth. I enjoyed how the author also started with the emotional aspect of contraceptive and planning because many people are oblivious to the fact it can be an emotional transition (especially if you are in a relationship). I knew that there were surgeries a person could get, condoms to be bought, or pills to be swallowed, but I didn’t truly know how many different forms and methods there were. The author does an exemplary job at naming every possible method and contraceptive there is to prevent the unwanted, and thoroughly elaborating on all of them. The charts and tables throughout the chapter gave a visual and helped break up all the reading. One section that I found vital to the chapter was the part on abstinence. I often forget it is a method because its not something you’re wearing or something you’re ingesting, but it is the only one 100% effective. I also thought it was smart to put in a whole section and visualization on how to use a condom and how to put it on because statistics show a lot of men do not actually know the proper way to wear one. While speaking about condoms, I found it ironic that the author stated condoms could increase intimacy, but then put an entire excerpt on the sexual research to create a new condom that allows more sensation because the original ones do not increase intimacy. Lastly, the striking topic of abortion was addressed well in this chapter.
Contrary to the misconception that abortion is a contraceptive, the author puts an immediate stop to this belief with the headline “Abortion is Not Contraception”.
