African American slaves helped America gain its independence. In From Slavery to Freedom By John Hope Franklin, it states “out of the 200,000 soldiers approximately 5,000 who fought in the Revolution war were African Americans.” Not only did The African American soldiers fight in every part of the war, they also fought in every condition imaginable. The majority of the Slave owners was paid $1,000 for each slave that was recruited to fight in the war. In Addition, Slaves that were recruited were promised that after the war, they would be freed and given $50. As stated in Finkenbine-Chapter 5,“Fired by hopes of freedom, African Americans fought in both the American and the British armies in the Revolution.” They fought for their freedom because that was what they were promised. They saw this war as an opportunity to escape the horrible lifestyles that they had been forced to live in. It is safe to presume that without the efforts of the African American slaves the outcome of the war would not have been the same. In addition, to participating in the revolution war African Americans also fought in the war of 1812. During the war of 1812, African Americans did not hesitate to fight for their country. There are always individuals from other ethnic groups that would like to prohibit Blacks from reaching their full potential. Every time, African Americans tried to develop a new community or create new schools etc. there was always someone there to try to block them from succeeding. White Americans did not want Blacks to be emancipated. They did not want African Americans to be treated equally because they did not think that both races could live together peacefully.( Chapter 6 From slavery to freedom) However, African Americans did not let that stop them from developing their communities. For Instance, Blacks valued education so when they were denied access to an education they decided to build their own schools. If they were denied something, they would go make it happen for themselves.( Chapter5)African Americans belong here just as much as individuals from other cultural
