The department isn’t equipped to provide full health services such as surgery or regular physician services, so they focus on helping students access that care. Michelle Barkley, the college nurse, is very well trained and is an expert in her field. She is more than capable of identifying health issues with students and helping them find solutions. This often includes referring students to other resources, such as the Sacramento Community Clinic, Planned Parenthood locations, self-care websites, and more. Not only do they provide pamphlets with all this information and resources listed on there, the people at the department have this info memorized. This includes vision screening, blood pressure screening, weight evaluation, hearing screening, TB skin testing, UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) testing, STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection), pregnancy, and other services. This is a long list, but the department is more than capable of handling being able to provide all of the services. In addition to the full time nurse Barkley, there are a few other nurses that work part time, and everyone is professionally trained and experienced enough to provide these services. During my interview with nurse Barkley, she listed her credentials and was able to convey to me exactly how the department provided these services. For example, in order for the department to conduct a TB skin test, the student or faculty member has to make an appointment and show up at the designated time. The nurses will have the necessary materials ready and will administer the test, and the user will be able to go home. They have to return within forty-eight and seventy-two hours to have the reaction evaluated and the final results obtained. This process and others like these are mapped out by the department and carried out effectively in order to provide the best possible service they can to the students and faculty of
