Understanding culture helps therapist to understand how others interpret their environment. In counseling psychology one of the main focuses and emphasizes should be on understanding individuals within their social and cultural context. One of the key factors in understanding cultures of others is coming into the realization of oneself.
Cultural Self-Awareness
Becoming culturally self-aware does not have anything to do with race, or ethnic background. A lot of people misunderstand what this really means; having a sense of identity and core values that allows them to function successfully in their personal and profession lives. Clarity is the key for one’s mind to expand and grasp the meaning of past and current events. As humans we all experience things that affect us in a good or bad ways. If we can take life lessons, find what we have a passion for and apply this to our purpose, we would have found meaning.
