In captivity, Louie went against the rules that are made by the POW guards. In the novel, Louie breaks many rules, “Louie and the others whispered in code…” (154). When Louie and the other POWs were in their cells, they would talk to each other in Morse code and the guards were annoyed of the whispers. For instance, Louie would stand up to the guards even though he was hurt badly, “The Bird demanded that Louie look him in the eyes; Louie wouldn’t do it” (181). This is no ordinary guard, The Bird wanted to shred Louie’s dignity the most. The Bird was a crazy man because he was regulated and rejected as a high status officer. He wanted to crush Louie’s dignity because Louie was famous for being an Olympic runner. Beatings made by The Bird were horrible, especially for Louie, the Bird was always rapture seeing Louie hurting. To add on to that idea, the Bird would use anything he could to beat Louie “The Bird jerked his belt off...Louie felt as if he’s been shot in the head...Louie pulled himself upright” (186). Though Louie had been through so much pain, he still stands up to The Bird. Furthermore, when Louie is in captivity, his family has no clue about him being alive. In chapter 25 of Unbroken, “Before I forget it, Dad, I would be very pleased if you would keep my guns in good condition…” (188). Being rebellious has helped Louie stand up to the guards when they were trying to dehumanize him and take away his dignity. Louie not only suffered from physical beatings but it affected his mental state. He stayed strong and never gave up. The act of being determined helped Louie plan out what he was going to do, this gave him the advantage over the guards. Doing this allowed Louie to feel he had some control. Louie persevered through all the physical and mental beatings. His family was his encouragement and motivation to overcome these trauma’s. He saw how God forgave those who had done bad and Louie wanted to reconcile with the people who tortured him. Like Louie, each person has the ability and decision to do the
