There is limited research surrounding the consequential effects that exposure to traumatic death events has on crime scene investigators (CSI). The purpose of Waugh (2017, 2) research is to discover whether there is a relationship between the exposure to traumatic events and the amount of event-related stress experienced by individuals in the profession. To determine if a relationship was present, Waugh (2017, 4) used the research question: do crime scene investigators experience event-related stress and if so, how much do they experience, to guide the investigation.
Although the study did not yield the hypothesised results, the research is still significant when discussing the experience of CSIs exposure to traumatic events. The research allowed CSIs to externalise their experiences, essentially giving them a voice. By allowing the subject area to reveal their experiences, the study was able to find further areas of interest for future studies, which will provide more insight to the similar levels of stress experienced by both first responders and CSIs. Overall, the study provides a foundation for further research into the effects of exposure to traumatic events on CSI while contributing to the limited literature on the topic.

For example, Waugh (2017, 7) identified that a qualitative research method would elicit a more open-ended response from all of the participants. This is due to a qualitative research method utilising tools such as individual interviews which allows for participants to go in-depth about their experiences (Gill et al. 2008, 291; Foster, Hays and Alter
