Theory is an abstract testable idea based on observation. It may later be used in the formation of a hypothesis which undergoes testing to confirm or dispel the idea. Research is conducted in order to connect theory with empirical data. According to Bachman & Schutt (2012), both have a “mutually reinforcing relationship” (p.32). Theory shares a relationship with collected data in a continual loop. Researchers collect and examine through qualitative and quantitative methods to enrich their research and understand all data. Criminological research is furthered with inductive reasoning and specific data that develops into ideas or deductive reasoning which is an idea later supported through testing.
