Black Boy begins with two plays playing and laughing; however, within minutes the house catches fire. Causing Richard, one of the boys, to run and hid underneath of the home. When the the family moved into a new home, the father left and abandoned them. When the father just left that causes Richard to suffer through the pain of the house of his father. Creating a battle for hungry, Richard began to work so he could help provide for the family. Ella soon became ill sending the children off to a foster home. The boys needed to stay in the home till their mother ella could provide a safe and stable home for them to live in. When his mother arrived with the news of them leaving, Richard stated, “my feelings recoiled so sharply and quickly from the home.” (44) Richard was beyond excited to leave. They moved in with their aunt later on in the novel. Thier uncle provided for the family and they always had food. Richard felt that there was no more being hungry, until the day a man showed up to the door with news that… “Mr. Hoskins… he’s done been shot” (63). His uncle was the man of the house who provided all the wonderful food, and now that's all gone. Richard then received a job working for white women and men, because his mother had become so ill she couldn't provide again.
