In the medical field, I would say we use critical thinking skills more than mathematical skills for paramedics. Critical thinking skills present themselves every day that we work as well as every patient that we have an encounter with. When a patient presents with a medical complaint it takes a process of critical thinking skills to diagnose and effectively treat that patient. Critical thinking skills are also used when it comes to reverting back to your training and education when it comes to diagnosing and treating these patient’s. Mathematics will come into play during the diagnose and treatment phase. Mathematics will also come into play especially if medications are needed. All medications have a specific dose that will be needed to be given to a patient, but most of these dosages will be weight based. So, the patients weight will be needed to give an accurate and safe dose. Most medications also come packaged in certain concentrations, such as four milligrams in a two milliliters solution. Melanie will also have to use a large amount of mathematical skills when it comes to managing her time with her patients, medication dosing, patient weights, vital signs and so on, Melanie will also have to document these numbers accurately in a computer …show more content…
If a patient needs to receive a simple or one time dose of medication, the nurse will administer that prescribed dose of medication. However, most times in the hospital setting, after figuring out the weight of the patient, some medications will be placed on a pump. For Melanie, this will also depend on where she is working within a hospital. Some units use pumps more than others, depending on the severity of the patient, drugs can be administered via a medical pump. A medication pump will effectively give the prescribed dose of the medication over a prescribed time, if entered
