Cuban Missile Crisis During the 1960’s the United States came too close to comfort with nuclear war between both Cuba and The USSR. To give a quick overview of this situation The USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba which was only 90 miles from the coast of the United States. Once the United States got word of this we took immediate action by sending a naval blockade to prevent anymore missiles from entering into Cuba. This standoff between these three countries lasted a long and tiring thirteen days. The Cuban Missile Crisis as it was later known as was dodged by a hair, sparing about 200 million lives. Since the Soviets removed their missiles from Cuba the United States soon after took our missiles out of Turkey. Even though this crisis seemed averted more problems soon came after the problem was resolved. The Soviets agreed to take their missiles out of Cuba but never mention taking their IL-28 Bombers out too. The United States’ naval blockade around the outskirts of Cuba was forced to continue until November, 20 1962 when the Soviets agreed to take out the IL-28 Bombers. The Cuban Missile Crisis stands out from the Cold War as being the closet two supers ever came to having nuclear war. Tensions between the USSR and The United States started to boil after post World War II decisions. From there this started the Cold War which plays a prominent role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. On November 25, 2016 Cuba’s communist leader Fidel Castro passed away. To start it off in 1959 Fidel Castro led an army to take over the American backed leader, Fulgencio Batista. After this The United States had lost any good ties it had with Cuba after the Bay of Pigs Invasion, ruining trust between the two countries. Along with this The United States didn’t necessarily agree with all of the methods Castro rule his people with. Castro’s brother Raul Castro is now in power of Cuba. He came to power in late 2008 and since then United States and Cuban relations have improved. In July 2015 Cuban and U.S. officials lifted a trade ban that had been established in the 1960’s after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
