Structural constraints are defined as ““preexisting structures that enables and can also limit one’s agency”. (Croteau, David, and William Hoynes. Media/society: Industries, Images, and Audiences. 4th ed. Thousand Oaks, Calif.: SAGE, 2012. Print.)”. Globalization is intended to allow different cultures to connect and to circulate communication across large distances. The connection and communication between different nations allow for the audience to interact and interpret content (agency) of foreign nations (the structure). In cultural imperialism, “media products exported from nations (mainly from western and American culture) are so dominate that it shapes the culture of another.” (Croteau, David, and William Hoynes. Media/society: Industries, Images, and Audiences. 4th ed. Thousand Oaks, Calif.: SAGE, 2012. Print.). Many businesses use global media in order to make a profit. The need for the businesses to make a profit causes cultural imperialism because the export of media content from American can influence the culture of the foreign nation which can leads to domination. Due to the domination and imperialism of nations (mainly European nations), many smaller nations can lose diversity and become homogenized. In cultural imperialism, American and western culture dominate smaller European nations. The domination of these nations cause many to conform to a society and culture similar to western and American society. For example, in the early 1990’s, Nickelodeon aired a children’s television show called the Ren & Stimpy Show, which “was a cartoon about a hyperactive Chihuahua and a cat that spits up hair balls” (“Homogenisation of Global Culture.” Homogenisation of Global Culture. Web. 4 Dec. 2015. http://www.converge.org.nz/pirm/homogeni.htm.). This show became popular in China, Taiwan, Korea, and many other European nations. The owner of nickelodeon, Summer Redstone, stated “Just as teenagers are the same all over the world, children are the same all over the world” (“Homogenisation of Global Culture.” Homogenisation of Global Culture. Web. 4 Dec. 2015. http://www.converge.org.nz/pirm/homogeni.htm.).). This example shows how the goal of many ownerships is to make a profit and how this goal leads to many nations to behave and thinking similarly, which limits
