When studying different cultures and ethnicities, many ideas and questions develop to what defines that culture. We start to distinguish the details of what different cultures believe in and value. The Anglo Saxons culture valued different ideas, but they particularly valued loyalty, riches/power, and selflessness. However, humans have similar values as the Anglo Saxons. Humans practice the same ideas that other cultures performed throughout their time. Beowulf, presents the culture of Anglos Saxons and how they portrayed their beliefs into the everyday life. Beowulf reveals how important riches and power connect to his life by fighting for them. Hrothgar makes a promise to Beowulf to receive riches and power for protecting him, Herot, and other warriors from Grendel. In “The Battle With Grendel”, Beowulf defeats the Grendel. However, Beowulf only wants to fight Grendel fairly knowing that Grendel does not usually fight with a sword.
