In Cyrano de Bergerac Cyrano is a brave and smart man. He has an overwhelming cup of confidence. Is this confidence physical or mental? As it says here, “A question: why do five-score enemies Seek to stick five-score daggers in the back of one poor poet? Answer: it’s because They know this poor defenseless rhymer is A friend of Cyrano de Bergerac! (Burgess 44), it is partly mental. He is asking, why do a 100 men want to kill a poor defenseless poet then he states his answer to his own question it is because he is a friend of himself. This shows mental confidence because he is bragging about how great he is and that is why they want to kill him. However, his confidence is not physical because he looks down upon his nose. Despite his very large nose, Cyrano de Bergerac does not let his appearance effect his mental confidence in a negative way but he does let it affect his physical confidence. Throughout this book, he shows mental confidence, as he is capable to fight 100 men but not only to fight, to speak with eloquence as he fights. The fact that he is not genetically blessed, plays a huge role in his lack of physical confidence. He is not physically confidant because he thinks he is too blemished to win Roxane’s heart. He even goes as far as insulting his nose multiple times throughout the book. This is a great example of how outer beauty effects the way people value you. Christin was valued for his beauty because he lacked smarts. Cyrano was very smart and had a magnificent personality that Roxane overlooked because at first she was looking for someone that was handsome. Cyrano’s personality is shown when Roxane requests for Christian to write to her and Cyrano decides to help Christin write love letters to her. Because Christian has the looks but lacks the ability to write these love letters. Cyrano is joyful and writes easily because he loves Roxane with all his heart and he wants to see her happy. “Whatever she wants it means that I At least exist for her” (Burges 41). Cyrano is willing to forfeit his feeling for Roxane to help his friend Christian.
