His parties were the most grand and elaborate in New York, and he became known because of them. However, Gatsby did not care about his place in society as much as he cared about Daisy. " 'I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties, some night, ' went on Jordan" (79). It would make sense if Gatsby threw a couple parties to show off to a girl he wanted to impress. Yet, this is not the case. Since Daisy and Gatsby still have not had an encounter at his parties he was waiting for, he tried and tried again. Gatsby’s perseverance showed that he was not in love with the idea of her, but that he was in love with her. “He hadn 't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (91). Gatsby lived for the purpose of Daisy’s approval. While everyone around him was so caught up with their reputation in society, Gatsby was caught up with his reputation to Daisy. She was in love with Gatsby, but she was in love with the idea of Tom. Gatsby proved he was worthy of Daisy by working hard just to be able to live near her, throwing her enchanting parties, and taking the blame for her mistakes.
