Dark matter is matter that cannot be detected by its absorption or emission of electromagnetic radiation. Scientists currently have a very dim understanding of exactly what dark matter is, but one theory is that dark matter is made up of exotic particles that don’t behave like ‘normal’ matter, but still exert a gravitational pull. They believe that dark matter exerts a gravitational pull because the amount of ‘regular’ matter in the universe, and ‘normal’ matter …show more content…
Like dark matter, more is unknown than is known about dark energy. One explanation for dark energy comes from a prediction made by Einstein that it is a property of space. This prediction states that space can have its own energy that would not decrease as space expands because this energy is a property of space. This energy would actually increase as space expands, and as a result, space would continue to expand faster. One idea states that dark energy is a fifth (and previously unknown) type of force that fills the universe as a liquid would called quintessence. A third explanation for dark matter is that Einstein’s theory of gravity is incorrect. This would affect our theories about universe expansion and how galaxies and clusters behave. Because all of our theories about celestial bodies in motion are heavily reliant upon the theory of gravity, those theories would have to find a different force or forces to replace gravity in our established
