THE CHEMISTRY
According to (Wikipedia, 2016), the deep-cycle battery is a type of lead-acid battery designed to be regularly deeply discharged using the majority of its capacity (45% - 75% depending on manufacturing and construction). These batteries are able to be cycled down to 20% charge, but the best cost vs lifespan method is to keep the average cycle at approximately 45% discharge. There is an indirect correlation between the number of charge and discharge cycles the battery can perform and its depth of discharge (DOD).
Specially designed deep-cycle cells are much less susceptible to degradation due to cycling, and are required for applications where the batteries are regularly discharged, such as photovoltaic systems, and uninterruptible power supplies.

Figure 1: The basic layout of a Deep-cycle Lead acid battery. From ___
Deep Cycle Lead Acid batteries consist of the following parts/ components: A positive and negative terminal: to enable the connection of cables. Solidly moulded for increased durability. Corrosion resistant dual terminals
Positive and negative electrodes: in the form of several plates comprised of lead or lead derived materials.
Separators/ cell dividers: separate the plates to prevent them from short-circuiting A diluted sulfuric acid electrolyte: with a specific gravity of 1.280 (when fully charged) A plastic container: the container is divided into six compartments, and each plate is connected in series to make up 12V. A cover: Impact resistant polypropylene case
Valves: Self-sealing safety valves with flame proofing
The rugged cell construction provides maximum vibration resistance and extends the product
