The word “hero” comes up often in our everyday lives. It typically comes up in the media quite a bit. What actually is a hero? Who and how can someone be classified as a so called hero? Now, the definition of a hero is: a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. That’s a great definition when getting technical, but to most people a hero means so much more.
What is a true hero? To understand what a heroic quality is, it can be easier to describe what a hero is not. It is a common occurrence to see many celebrities or athletes being called heroes either online or on the news, but are they actually heroes? In the summer of 2013, two year old Kyan Quintana was just starting to get comfortable in the water. On June 9, 2013 – just three weeks shy of his third birthday – he drowned. Despite having to deal with the devastating loss of their child they decided to react in a positive way. The parents of Kyan Quintana had planned to create a swimming foundation rightfully named, “Kyan’s Kause.” Run by volunteers, Kyan’s Kause provides free swimming lessons and water safety instructions. With this foundation, Kyan’s Kause has helped almost 2,500 children from ages 3 to 14 be safe in the water. The Quintana’s goal is to make sure that no child suffers like their son did. The Quintana’s are true real life heroes that overcame a significant loss in order to help the people in their community. By doing what they believed was right; the Quintana’s became heroes in the eyes of many. They provided dedication to other families in the area in order to prevent them from having to have to live through the same tragedy they faced, and that’s exactly what heroes are
